OpenAI’s video generation application, Sora, has climbed to the top of the App Store despite being available by invitation only. It surpassed ChatGPT in its first week.
OpenAI’s video generation platform, Sora, which quickly became one of its most popular applications, reached 627,000 downloads in its first week after launch. According to Appfigures data, this figure slightly surpassed ChatGPT’s performance of 606,000 downloads during its iOS launch.
Overtook ChatGPT in its First Week

Sora was made available in the US and Canada on September 30, 2025. On its first day, the application climbed to third place in the overall App Store rankings with 56,000 downloads, and by October 3rd, it secured the number one spot in the US App Store. Even when assessing the launch solely with US data, Sora’s performance reached 96% of ChatGPT‘s first week, including the approximately 45,000 downloads from Canada.
Another element that makes this success more significant is that the application is still operating under an invitation system. While ChatGPT was accessible to everyone upon launch, Sora achieved these figures with limited access. According to Appfigures data, Sora reached 107,800 daily downloads on October 1st and has since continued to receive a steady 84,000 to 98,000 daily downloads.
